Setting goals through blogging

Monday, May 28, 2012

There's a tropical storm hovering over us on this fine memorial day so there's nothing but on-again off- again rain, and little bursts of sunshine here and there.  Rainy days like these makes for the perfect time to get lost in blog land.  In doing so, I found this post: What's Next? So you quit your day job now what?  by Melanie of Inward Facing Girl.  She had very detailed goals on how she was going to get from point A to point B with her start-up business.  Needless to say it got me thinking...

Do you believe that blogging about your goals is more effective than writing them down in your personal notebook?   I'm assuming it might hold you more accountable, what do you think?

  1. I was going to say yes, blogging is better because you're more accountable, but to be honest, the thing that works best for me is large post-it pads with lines on it. I like that I can stick them places. I like that they're neat and small. And I like that if I decide I don't like that idea I can easily throw it out and start over.

  2. I like doing both - writing goals in my journal and on the blog. For me, writing my goals on the blog holds me more accountable. I like the aspect of putting something out into the universe, as well. You never know who might be able to help you with your goal. I'm off to read Melanie's post. Thank you!

  3. I like both. There are some goals that I like to hold close to my heart, since the journey is so solo and I don't necessarily want input from others. While other goals are ok for me to share cause I could use the support and the motivation.
Will check out your recommendation, thanks for sharing.

  4. Writing it down works best for me. Unfortunately, I found that sometimes posting it to my blog doesn't work for me only because if I haven't achieved the goal I feel like I've let my audience down, then I avoid my blog like the plague. I have two close friends who are my accountability buddies. We skype once a week to keep each other accountable. It has helped me tremendously. I prefer that once I've achieved my goal I can blog about the entire process from start to finish. Love your blog!

  5. I think it depends on the goals and the following. There are personal things that really, it helps me to visualize them to have them on paper. It is a commitment to me. And there are some things I put on my blog, but if you rarely get commentary there, then it's kind of a false accountability if no one actually calls you out for not following up (kind of like at work for me where we all think we're cool, nice people and don't call each other out). Often, "accountability" is seen as a dirty/bad word when really, accountability gets us to our goals.

So maybe a third way - or all of the above. Whatever gets me to get it done in the moment.
