Aesthetics: Modred 12

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

I think I'm starting to understand the type of photos I'm drawn to as it pertains to product styling.  Either photos that have some type of artistic/colorful/creative approach to it, or photos that have products styled around the person's life.  Don't get me wrong, I still love product shots on a clean white background, but I feel more of a connection to photos with a bit of busy in it.  Modred 12 does a really good job of evoking such a feeling in me.

How about you?  What type of photos are you drawn to when it comes to styling products?  Inside/Outside shots?  White/Textured/Colorful background?  Do tell...

P.S.  Did you download your  March desktop calendar by Geninne?

  1. Hm, that's a very good question...One I never really thought about. I really like the styling in Martha Stewart Living and the eMag, Sweet Paul. I'm trying to think what connects them all. I guess, first, it's the composition of the photo. Second, I'm drawn to colors and textures of the items in the shot. I also love a lot of negative space.

  2. The style that springs to mind for me is Jeanette Lunde at By Fryd. She did a beautiful calendar for the Mollie Makes magazine, you can see the photos on her blog for the calendar here: http://frydogdesign.blogspot.com/p/photos-for-mollie-makes-calendar-2012.html

I'd love to see your bags photographed in the style of Modred 12!

Thanks for the Geninne tip off, I'll go do it now!

PS I bought a brilliant book called A Crafters Guide to Product Photography - haven't put it into practice yet, but it was really helpful for me (although I didn't know anything about product photography).

  4. Tori, I've awarded you the Leibster award. You may have been given it before. Please don't feel pressured to pass it, just do it if you want to.

  5. I totally know what you mean about being drawn to a certain TYPE of photo. I recently joined instagram and I find myself being more drawn to the ones that I like the levels of colors on rather than basing it on content. I tend to like the pictures that have black as the darkest color in them - which doesn't sound like a big deal, but a lot of times there's not that solid base for me in the picture. Every so often I'll like a picture without black in it - but it's got to be something REALLY snazzy.
